The Fields of SE Minnesota (Spring 2015)

Spring in my neck of the woods. Snow is gone and colors start to reappear everywhere. Farmers plow, prepare and seed their fields. The feeling of live coming back cannot be more uplifting. This the images in this book capture some of this feeling and beauty.

Fall in Rochester (December 2014)

Every season hast its special charm and beauty, but none are more spectacular than the Fall. One can almost be blinded by the brilliance of gold, yellow and red colors. In particular, when this incredible display of paintings is just next to me, in my neighborhood and in the open fields of Rochester, in South East Minnesota.

The pictures in this book capture some of the beauty that Mother Nature brings to my corner of the world every year, as summer dwindles and winter is just around the corner.

Columbia Heights (August 2014)

Columbia Heights is a neighborhood in Washington, DC that is still somewhat in transition. Probably one of Washington’s most ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods, it has undergone a dramatic revitalization over the past few years; old row houses, renovated but keeping their old architectural charm, sit side by side with modern condominiums and retail stores.

On Sunday afternoons, when the weather is warm and dry, a rhythm starts to sound from Meridian Hill Park. People from all over the world who now live in or visit Washington gather to play a variety of percussion styles to celebrate their history and the community.

Also known as Malcolm X Park this is an urban park like no other. The formal, 12-acre site includes unique statues like Dante and Joan de Arc, the largest cascading fountain  in North America, concrete aggregate architecture, a U.S. presidential memorial, and more. The park was designed based on an Italian aristocrat’s private residence and is a favorite place for DC residents to exercise, relax, and play together.

Silkscarf (September 2011)

Summerland is a town on the west side of Okanagan Lake in the interior of British Columbia. It is popular because of its idyllic landscapes and settings, its location on Okanagan Lake and its sandy beaches. Summerland is the home of several world renowned wineries inlcuding Silkscarf, a family boutique winery born of a shared dream of creating premium wines and working closely with nature. The idea seemed to be an inspiration within the family, who rapidly discover that this is what they were supposed to do all along.

This book takes you from the general surroundings, the lake and the forests, to the many wineries to Silkscarf and its grapes and fruits, to the wine production facilities, through the store to the wine bottles.

I took those pictures during a visit to our friends at Silkscarf on September 2011.

Brazil May 2010
This book is about two different beauties, Campos de Jordao and Barretos.
Campos de Jordao is a resort town north of Sao Paulo, located at high elevation in the Mantiquieria Mountains. Buildings are mostly vernacular architecture from German, Swiss and Italian models. It is a trendy resort for the rich and famous of Sao Paulo.

Barretos is a city in a rural area of the State of Sao Paulo. Its surrounding areas are dedicated to agriculture and livestock. Barretos hosts annually the most famous rodeo festival in the country, the Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro. The beauty of Barretos is, in addition to its landscape, its heart. It is the home of the Hospital de Câncer de Barretos (HCB), an internationally renowned oncology and research institute. The hospital serves 3,000 patients each day, coming from all regions of Brazil and suffering from all types and levels of cancer. City governments from different parts of Brazil organize transportation and sometimes rent houses for patients to undertake their treatment at the hospital. All the treatment, medicine, housing and food are provided to the patients for free. It is in every sense “The Hospital of Love”.

Jenny’s Garden (July 2010)

This book is just a glimpse of an act of love and dedication. Jenny created a wonderful garden in the back yard of her house in Rochester, MN. Not  a big garden, but nonetheless a beautiful work of art. All pictures were taken during two days in July 2010. Each flower a wonder of beauty by itself, and the aggregate of all, a masterful display of colors and shapes with an incredible sense of serenity and tranquility. A little paradise indeed.
